A Here to There, LLC event

Finishers Awards

2010 is not only the 5th anniversary of the Ghost Town 38.5, it's the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon. So I've decided to blend some ancient customs with some New Mexican ones. Athletes in ancient Greece would often receive olive branches or some other flower/flora depending on where the races were held. This year, Ghost Town runners will receive a chile ristra (strung chiles) in lieu of olive branches. The ristras are coming from the Hatch Chile Express just down the road and will be made from Hatch chiles. I've opted for the non-treated ristras so that runners can actually eat the chiles throughout the year.

The Special Awards

I did a lot of thinking on what to give as the awards. Keeping with the idea of something traditionally associated with New Mexico, I went shopping for turquoise. I don't have any photos yet, but each of the eight award winners will receive something of my own design and making. I can tell you that it will include turquoise, silver, copper, and coral - all treasured in NM for centuries.

NEW AWARD for 2010: The Mamaw Ruby - my mamaw used to give us a dollar for every year we were old. It paid to age in my family. So, in her honor, the runner finishing in the same place as my age (and I have a birthday in January) will receive an award. It pays to be slow! In 2010 the Mamaw Ruby award will go to the 56th finisher.

Here's the complete list:

1st place overall male finisher '10 - Nick Clark, 41 (CO) 5:09:11

1st place overall female finisher '10 - Rochelle Wirth, 47 (MN) 5:43:21

oldest finisher under the clock in the full event '10 - Jean Jacques d'Aquin, 70 (CO) 9:37:47

The Martin Luther King Day award '10 - to the 18th place finisher Kari Fraser, 43 (CO) 7:02:37

The Mamaw Ruby award for the 56th finisher - Jim Burke, 50 (OH), 8:43:29

The Marty Duchow award goes to the first finisher who lives at 1,000 ft. or less elevation.  This is in honor of Marty who ran in both '06 and '07, finishing 3rd and 4th respectively.  Each year we've discussed the fact that he lives at sea level and has finished only behind runners who live at a mile (or more) high.  Such effort should be rewarded, so all you lowlanders get ready!

The '10 Marty Duchow went to Rochelle Wirth, 47 (MN) 5:43:21

The Jeff Johnston award for the most improved runner in any two consecutive years. The '10 award went to Gil Heredia, 40 (NM).  Gil took just over an hour off his 2009 finish. Here's a link to those who were eligible (and their '10 and '09 finish times) in 2010:   The Jeff Johnston Award

The Bill Halm award for the first place finisher of the GT Double Masters Ultra.

Bill, 82 (NH) won his own award with a finish time of 8:25:31 for the 27 mile course of the Double Masters.
